Barn Quilts in Garrett County, Maryland
Pieces of Our Past

Welcome!
A collaborative effort of volunteers, organizations, and county
government, the Barn Quilt Association of Garrett County (BQA)
strives to promote quilting, heritage, agritourism, folklife, and
history.
Donna Sue Groves, a native Appalachian, purchased an old
farm that included an old tobacco barn. To honor her mother, an
avid quilter, Donna Sue painted a quilt block on the old structure.
That was the beginning of Barn Quilts, which has now spread to
at least 23 states.
We're hoping to be the first county in Maryland with a barn quilt
trail! You can help make that happen! Click the "Get Involved"
link at left to find out how you can participate in this exciting
program.
A special "thank you" to the Garrett County Development
Corporation for serving as our fiscal agent until we received our
official 501(c)(3) non profit status! For more information about
the Garrett County Development Corporation, visit
www.GCEDOnline.com or call 301-334-1921.
Where are we?
We're located in extreme Western Maryland, high in the
Appalachian mountains. Rural Garrett County is home to Deep
Creek Lake, the Wisp Resort, Adventure Sports Center
International, many outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking,
biking, horseback riding, boating, whitewater rafting, and more.
Our eight small towns have lots of opportunities for shopping,
antiquing, or grabbing a lunch at a unique restaurant. Go to
www.VisitDeepCreek.com to learn more about our beautiful
county.
“The barn quilts are public art that
celebrates the place people call home.
They make people feel good about
themselves and where they live.”

first barn quilt, pictured above.
