Heritage Quilters

A monthly gathering of quilters
in Garrett County

Who We Are
We are a group of women who want to share their love of quilting.
We are not a Guild, there are no dues. We are loosely organized
with officers and committees which are elected by the membership annually.
We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month and are currently meeting
in the Continuing Education Building at Garrett College on Mosser
Road at 7pm.

    A Brief History
The Heritage Quilters was established in 1998. In July of that year, Thelma
Emory attended the Quilt Show at Penn Alps and saw a beautiful quilt with
a local address made by Joan Chaney. Thelma later called Joan and
asked if she would be interested in forming a quilting group. Without
hesitation, Joan said yes, and between word of mouth and news articles,
the group began meeting. And the rest is history!

What We Do
Each month at the meeting, committees update the members on
information pertinent to their committee. Members also have an
opportunity to share information on quilt shops they’ve visited,
new resources they’ve found, etc. There is a Show and Tell time
for anyone who would like to show what they’ve been working on.
And, each month a member gives a demonstration of a technique
they want to share with the group.

In addition, the group creates a
charity quilt annually which is
given to a non-profit organization in the area to be used as a fundraiser.

We sponsor a quilt show during Autumn Glory in
October each year. It is not a juried show. A People’s
Choice Award is given and revenue from the show
pays for the expenses incurred in sponsoring the
show , i.e. insurance, rental of the facility, etc.

We also make a quilt to raffle off at the Autumn
Glory Show  the proceeds of which are used to help
    meet group expenses.

We occasionally have
quilting retreats in the local area, inviting quilters from nearby areas to join
us.

Christmas blocks are made by any members wanting
to participate using fabric purchased by the group. Each
person who made a block has their name placed in a
drawing for all the blocks which can then be made into a
    Christmas Quilt.

Our Policies and Procedures
1. New officers will be voted into office during the May meeting. A nominating committee shall be formed
at the March meeting consisting of 3 members who are not officers (President, Vice President,
Treasurer or Recording Secretary). Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the May
meeting with the written or verbal consent of those nominees.  If there is only one nominee for each
office, the slate may be elected by voice vote of the majority of members present.  Otherwise, voting
shall be by ballot.  The newly elected candidates will take office in June.

2. Decisions of the Heritage Quilters shall be made by majority vote of those members attending the
meeting at which a vote is taken. Any members who abstain from voting shall be asked if they need
more information or discussion. When a second vote is taken, any abstentions shall be counted as a
“no” vote.

3. Expenses incurred by members for Heritage projects shall be submitted to the Treasurer for
reimbursement. Amounts over $25 must be pre-approved by vote of the membership. The expense
request must have a receipt.  A hand-written receipt is acceptable (parking expense at quilt show for
example).  All receipts shall indicate the date and the reason for the expense.

4. Individual members are encouraged to get together to form special interest groups (SIGs) such as
appliqué, hand quilting, paper piecing, etc. but these projects will not be supported by the Heritage
Quilters treasury.
